My Beach

Yes, that is Gemiler bay. This photo was taken from the top of Gemiler Island, which I showed on my front page and which I promised to tell you more about later. Hello friends,My real name is Achmet but everone calls me Robinson. I suppose the reason is that I have lived a bit like Robinson Crusoe for most of my life.

I do not live on an island but on a beach in Turkey. It can now be reached by road, but when I first came here about 45 years ago it could only be reached by sea or a steep mountain track. At that time I lived here alone in a small wooden hut and worked hard for many years, to make it a nice and peaceful resting place - planting and watering all kinds of fruit- and olive-trees.

We now have tourists visit us, but for half the year it is still a very quiet and peaceful place. I forgot to mention that it is also very beautiful. I have many friends who visit me from nearby Kaya or Fethiye and we have a lot of fun in my restaurant on the beach.

I introduce you to some of my friends

First of all "Gemiler Achmet", he is a good friend and runs the watersports around here, including the "Banana Boat". Not that this quiet bay is spoiled by such activities, they take place well off-shore and appeal mainly to the day-trip boats.
Lorain was a guest at John+Beas house, she and husband Mike have been here a few times.
John and Bea have lived here for about ten years, he is known as 'Old John' [or Big John].The photo of those two was taken on John's boat the time I first met them, that would be about ten years ago.

About Gemiler Island

Gemiler Island, also known as St Nicholas Island is very interesting and worth a visit. In Byzantine times it had a population of around 2000 people and though it was probably not a declared monastry there is no doubt that Christianity was very important to the people of there and the nearby mainland. There are remains of 3 large churches and several chapels. There was no well or spring water and rain was collected off all the roofs [including the church roofs] and stored in water tanks. Most tanks were 5 to 10 ton in capacity but there remains a large tank of about 1500 ton capacity.
St Nicholas may well have spent time on the island when he was a bishop in nearby Myra.
